Botanical classification: In recent years Botanists have reclassified many plants from previous classifications. In some cases consolidating species and varieties and in some cases reclassifying to a different genus. Our prime source is Flora of North America, and in Minnesota the Annotated Checklist of the Vascular Flora of Minnesota. Reference books in print will not reflect these recent updates until revised editions are published. While many plants may be known by a previous botanical name and, in many cases by a variety of common names, we have updated the listings on this website to the newest nomenclature.

*Bloom time: For flowering plants, the approximate time for first blooms; for other plants - when first fully formed or in leaf. Some plants bloom for long periods. " Spring" = April to May 31; "Early Summer" = June 1 to July 15; "Late Summer" = July 16 to August 31; "Autumn" = Sept. 1 to Oct. 31.

Links on the Common name are to a page of photos and plant information.
Historical (once present) and other Minnesota plants not found in the Garden are so noted.
